Gospel Assembly Church
Letter From Paul Simpson
to Lloyd Goodwin

I have had a copy of this letter for a while, but I have just been told that I have permission to share this letter with anyone. So here it is. It was written in 1987.

It's hard to read this letter without feeling overwhelmed with sadness. Lloyd Goodwin was an evil, evil man. And he taught Lee Ray well.

Dear Bro. Goodwin:

Several years have rolled by now since you told me to never show my face in your church again. Since then I have waited very patiently for a friendly relationship with my son and daughter, [names withheld] whom I love very much. However, I know from where their instructions come not to have anything to do with me. They come from you. So the time has come for me to write you concerning this matter.

First of all, I have a question for you. As you know, the reason you kicked me out of your church was because I moved my other daughter, [name withheld], out of her mothers home and into an apartment without your consent. Now if my doing that was so bad that you would kick me clear out of the church, my question is this; Why was your Asst. Pastor, Lee Ray, not kicked out of the church for commiting adultery with [name withheld] and getting her pregnant with her third child, [name withheld], thus causing the divorce of [names withheld]? As you know, that is why [she] had to leave [him] and why she left Des Moines - she was pregnant with Lee Ray's baby. And before she left town you tried to force her to have an abortion and she refused you, didn't she? You preach, profess and print literature of being against abortion except in a life or death choice between mother and child. This one was no life or death choice, was it? So why did you want rid of this child so bad that you would resort to demanding [she] have an abortion? Because it was a pregnancy you wished to abort in order to hide this whole affair of Lee's, that is why. I am ever so thankful that [she] refused your demand as I see little [name withheld] quite often down here in Arkansas and we dearly love the little fellow. He calls me "Grandpa".

You, myself, [name withheld], [name withheld], Lee and many others know this is all true, don't we, Bro. Goodwin? My, my, here we have an Asst. Pastor who commits adultery, gets a sister pregnant, fathers a child causing a divorce, and a Pastor who would resort to abortion in order to hide and cover up the affair. What a pair to represent the gospel and the name of Jesus Christ.

For those that can remember the particular church service, your only public admonition to Lee Ray for this affair, Bro. Goodwin, was when you shuffled the Elders seating around during that church service moving Lee to the side while moving another Elder to the seat on your right. Then you started rotating the Elders every thirty days to sit on your right. That was your sly way of slapping Lee on the wrist for this affair while no one was suppose to know what you two were up to.

I wonder if Lee and another certain married sister still leave notes for each other in a book in the church library? Notes like that lead to meeting and having an affair, don't they? How many other affairs and attempted affairs has Lee Ray had in the church since he married Alice? And yet Lee sits up there by you, Bro. Goodwin, like a peacock. What a sham.

So here, Lee Ray, your Asst. Pastor, can commit adultery, get a sister pregnant, cause a divorce, have other affairs with other sisters, yet stay in the church, yet stay seated on the platform, yet stay Asst. Pastor, and yet be ordained, while having all his affairs hid by you when I only moved my daughter to an apartment and got kicked clear out of the church with you shouting to the rafters how no-good I was. What a comparison. What sense of values you have. But that is the kind of man you are. And that's not all about you:

Back in 1982, I moved from Des Moines to Springfield, Missouri. Just two days after I arrived in Springfield, by coincidence, I found Sharon Dotson living there (Wanda Hall's sister). We hardly believed our eyes when we first saw each other. During the three years I lived in Springfield that first and again a second time, I had many, many long talks with Sharon. I saw her frequently and talked to her frequently on the phone. We still keep in touch and I see her whenever I take a drive over to Springfield now. So I have heard her side of the story many times, Bro. Goodwin, concerning your sexual advances toward her and everything you did to her. The following paragraph proves her side of the story to be true, contrary to what you said about her from the pulpit.

As it so happened, back when Sharon and her family lived in Des Moines and attended your church, so did I. And after Sharon was forced to leave Des Moines by you because you feared exposure, we heard you go into a rampage several times from the pulpit concerning her and warning her sister, Wanda, not to write or talk to her. We actually heard you lie about Sharon from the pulpit, didn't we? To confirm that you lied, when Bro. & Sis. Baker confronted you about this affair, you admitted to them it was true what you did and true what they heard. And that is why Bakers broke fellowship with you. You thought admitting the truth to them would hold them, but you were wrong, weren't you? By this admission to Bakers, you also actually admitted you lied to your congregation from the pulpit about Sharon.

Thank God there is at least one minister who will not stand behind the corruption and immorality of another minister. What story did you tell your congregation as to why Bakers broke fellowship with you?

In addition to Sharon, Bro. Goodwin, I must mention [name withheld] whom at her young age of 16, you made advances to. Yes, she was only 16. That makes you a child molester, doesn't it? Here's you.. a married man, Pastor of a church and claiming to be "THE" man of God, while having these kind of affairs and backing your Asst. Pastor while he has his. Again I say, what a pair to represent the Gospel and the name of Jesus Christ.

So these are the leaders and examples of my two children and grandchildren? These are the ones pointing their finger at me telling my kids and others how no-good I am - ministers that think nothing of seducing sisters and committing adultery, that think nothing of child molesting, abortions, lying, destroying lives, homes, and marriages, that think nothing of instilling hate in children's hearts against their parents while instructing them to break the very laws and commandments of God. I ask you God, is this all you have to offer in a minister representing you and your word? I think not.

I remind you, Bro. Goodwin, that you, yes you, destroyed my marriage, you destroyed the love of two of my children for me, you destroyed my friendship with friends of mine, and once you nearly cost me my life. That's quiet enough to do to one man, isn't it? But I assure you that you will not get away with all this. Someday you'll get yours, That's a promise from God and a promise from Paul Simpson. I will also remind you that you are not above God's law and that you are not God nor the ruler of this universe.

When you kicked me out of your church you said these words to me; "never show your face in "MY" church again". You certainly told me whose church it is, didn't you? For "MY" church is not God's church, that's for sure. Thanks so much for kicking me out of "YOUR" church, for knowing what I now know, my standards and ideals of a real man of God far exceeds what you demonstrate or possess. I just hope and pray that someday my two kids and their families find their way out of your clutches and into a church where they can serve God instead of man as they now do.

As Rev. Jerry Falwell recently said concerning evangelist Jim Baker's sexual encounter with his secretary, "it doesn't really matter whether someone seduced you or you raped someone, if you're a man of God and a leader of the flock, and you yield, as far as I'm concerned, you're out of the ministry".

There is no doubt in my mind that Rev. Jerry Falwell as well as the Assemblies of God have much higher moral standards then you, Bro. Goodwin, and Lee Ray. For when Rev. David Crabtree, previous Pastor of the First Assemblies of God church there in Des Moines, was caught having a sexual relationship with his secretary, the Assemblies of God ousted him as Pastor of that church. But you and Lee Ray try to cover up and hide your sexual encounters with women pretending they didn't happen expecting your congregation to accept anything you do or say without question. Again I say, Rev. Jerry Falwell and the Assemblies of God have much higher moral standards than you and you're the one claiming to be "THE" man of God and to be the one and only church whereby anyone can enter the Kingdom of Heaven. If that is true after what I know about you and your Asst. Pastor, Lee Ray, God help us all.

Ministers have a special obligation to order their lives in ways that do not reflect poorly on their primary task. The apostle Paul told Timothy that the first character quality of a minister is that he be "above reproach." The past affairs of yours and Lee Ray's certainly demonstrates that neither of you are above reproach. Both of you should get out of the ministry. Your congregation deserves better.

II Cor. 11:20, is a perfect description of you, Bro. Goodwin;

"For ye suffer, if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man takeof you, if a man exalt himself, if a man smite you on the face."    That description fits you to a "T".

Just remember, you  can fool some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time. You and Lee Ray are a shame and a disgrace to the name of Jesus.

Most Sincerely,

Paul Simpson
